About Rainbow Springs Trails

Rainbow Springs Trails began the way most family projects do — as a way of remembering things. After one too many trips where we relearned the same lessons about wet tents, cold sleeping bags and hungry children, we started writing them down. What began as notes on a phone became this journal.

We are an ordinary outdoors family: two parents who grew up camping, children who are still deciding whether they love it, and grandparents who come along for the gentler trips. Between us we have pitched tents in most weathers, cooked more foil-packet dinners than we can count, and occasionally traded the campsite for a bigger family adventure abroad.

What we write about

Everything here has been tested by us, on real trips, usually with at least one thing going wrong. We cover campfire cooking, trail skills, gear that has earned its place in the boot of the car, and the logistics of travelling as a family — from a first night close to home to the occasional long-haul trip with three generations in tow.

We do not take payment to recommend products, and we do not pretend every trip is a glossy success. The muddy, rained-off weekends make the best stories anyway.
